Gros Morne National Park: Long Range Traverse (2 days / 43 km)

A hike that will make you wonder what planet you are on. The Long Range Traverse is an unmarked, rugged backcountry wilderness adventure located in Gros Morne National Park. You will be at the mercy of Newfoundland weather, but surrounded by the most stunning and unique landscapes. An absolute must for the experienced hiker… or a group of intermediate hikers with lots of confidence.

Guidebook: We did not use a physical guidebook, however we did lots of research and read through all of the online information supplied by Parks Canada. The Long Range Traverse has a downloadable PDF that highlights a bunch of important information. 

You are required to attend an orientation at 2:30pm the day before you start your hike at the Gros Morne visitors center in Rocky Harbour. During this orientation a guide will present a slideshow that will give you an overview of some challenges you may face, how to handle possible wildlife encounters, and what does and does not count as an emergency. They reinforce the fact that being wet, cold, and not having fun, does not count as an emergency (apparently this has happened in the past). 

The biggest takeaway is that the weather in Gros Morne can be brutal, and can change quickly. Heavy rain and fog and high winds are common. Since this is an “unmarked trail” it is very easy to get off track when there is heavy fog. You need to plan for delays, be smart, and bring extra supplies.
