Haliburton Water Trails: Wren Lake to Margaret Lake

This trip can be done as a linear route (as outlined in this trip report) and it can also be done as a loop. It's located in the South Western sector of the Haliburton Water Trails/Frost Centre area and is a great route for beginners or for anyone looking for a quick overnight adventure. Portage trails are well-marked and easy to find despite some muddy put-ins and take-outs.

The route starts at the Wren Lake Access Point, which is located a few kilometers north of the Frost Centre office on Hwy 35 and is marked as Access Point E on The Frost Centre Adventure Map. The takeout for this route is Margaret Lake Access Point A, which is found at the end of Margaret Lake Rd, South of the Frost Centre office on Hwy 35.

Permits and Reservations

Campsite Reservations: Reservations are required and can be made through Haliburton Water Trails. Select "Wren Lake" as the access point.

Permits: Permits can be printed beforehand and carried with you, or you could pick them up at the main office.

Know Before You Go

Season: Spring, Summer, Fall.

Cell Reception: Cell reception was found intermittently throughout the trip.

Water: Water is easily accessible.

Wildlife: There are black bears in the area, as well as moose, deer and other forest creatures typically found in a Central Ontario forest.

Waste: There are thunderboxes at the campsites. There are limited garbage facilities at the park office and none at the put-in or take-out locations.

Outfitters and Shuttles

Outfitter: There are rentals available at the Frost Centre office.

Shuttle: This route does require a shuttle. We chose to self-shuttle, as we had two vehicles....
