Duncanson Lake to Lake Temagami (Sandy Inlet), via Lady Evelyn River and Diamond Lake (5 days / 65 km)

Trip Report - Duncanson Lake to Lake Temagami

This trip hits some of my favourite places and views of the Temagami Area. It starts in some semi-recent burn that has started to regrow and takes you through both Lady Evelyn-Smoothwater and Obabika River Provincial Parks.

Even though you’re avoiding the more technical parts of the Lady Evelyn River, this trip will still take you to Cheebayjing, as well as a few of the waterfalls on the North Channel of the Lady Evelyn. You also get to explore the beautiful, twisting, lakes of Willow Island, Lady Evelyn, Diamond, and Temagami.

We were a group of just three, and so were able to cover ground pretty quickly. As the most experienced paddler, I was in a solo canoe, and my two companions shared a tandem.

Maps & Resources

Note from Mikaela: We're in the middle of adding Temagami to the Route Planner. Once it's done, we will add an interactive map to this trip report with campsites and portages labelled.

Permits & Reservations

Campsite Reservations: Campsites are on a first-come, first-served basis. We did not have any issues with finding sites.

Permits: You do need Interior Camping permits for the nights that you are spending in the Lady Evelyn-Smoothwater and Obabika River parks. For us, that was nights 1-3. You can make this reservation by going to the Ontario Park Reservation Portal and selecting Backcountry Registration < Temagami Cluster < and then the provincial park.
